Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. “NeuroStar is the first and only FDA-cleared transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment for this age group, making it the fourth FDA-cleared indication for NeuroStar".
How it works:
• A magnetic coil is placed on the patient's scalp over the target area of the brain, typically the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC).
• Magnetic pulses are delivered to the brain, inducing small electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells.
• This stimulation can help improve brain activity and neurotransmitter function, leading to a reduction in depressive symptoms.
